How long should I brush my teeth for?

You may recall your dental professional asking you to brush your teeth 2 times a day for 2 minutes. But do people actually time the 2 minutes? Studies show most people only brush for 30 to 45 seconds. Plaque is continuously forming in our mouths and the optimal solution to tackle those bad bugs, is with mechanical removal.

Simply using a standard toothbrush is just not enough. There is a clear relationship between brushing time and the amount of plaque in your mouth. Studies have suggested over and over that the amount of plaque removed is highly dependent on the brushing time. Therefore, it is crucial for us not only to brush 2 times a day, but for 2 minutes each time.

In addition to the importance of brushing time, ensuring that all surfaces of the tooth are brushed is equally as important, if not more. Get close to the gum line, brush gently and make sure to brush around the surface of every tooth. How do you get to the surface in between your teeth? With floss of course! We will discuss the importance of flossing in our next blog post.

Happy brushing!
